Public Transportation and the Environment
This chapter examines how public transportation systems can be viewed from an environmentally conscious perspective. The next section defines what is meant by a public transportation system. The following section then examines the relationship between environmental impacts and transit system planning and operations. This relationship not only includes the physical impacts that result from the construction and operation of such systems, but also the important symbiotic relationship between transportation accessibility and land use, which over the long term can affect the overall sustainability of a metropolitan area. The last section of the chapter concludes with important observations relating to a more environmentally conscious approach to public transportation planning and system design.
