SCALE EFFECTS IN MANOEUVRING TESTS WITH SMALL SHIP MODEL

Manoeuvring tests with model ships in true to scale harbour models to assist with the design of harbour entrances gains importance with the ever increasing sizes of ships requiring deeper and wider entrance channels. Predictions of their manoeuvring behaviour under various local conditions are possible using relatively small model ships, but scale effects have to be taken into account in using the results to predict prototype behaviour. This paper briefly outlines a new approach to compensate for scale effects caused by viscosities with particular emphasis on manoeuvring tests in the Richards Bay Harbour model entrance channel.
