FENDERING SYSTEMS--ARE THEY ADEQUATE?
Bulk carriers are getting larger with the result that facilities for berthing ships are constantly under review. This paper examines certain of the factors affecting the design of quay fenders to withstand the berthing impact of large tankers. If sufficient data of the type indicated in this paper was available it is felt that an "energy level" chart for different displacements and drafts of bulk carriers would emerge which could prove useful to designers; bearing in mind that the hydrodynamic mass factor increases with increasing displacement e.g. from 1.32 (light ballast) to 1.92 (fully loaded) for the Universe Ireland, and that berthing speed drops with increasing displacement. (The latter conclusion on berthing speeds has been reached by many authors.)
