Rail privatisation update (2004-2008)

This issue of Current Topics includes over 75 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on the various approaches to railway privatisation which are now taking place across the world. Abstracts are included on financing structures, including franchising and concessioning, post privatisation regulation and accountability. Amongst the specific topics covered are: upgrading of infrastructure / rolling stock; outsourcing of maintenance functions; effects of competition; and passenger and freight rail services. Several abstracts assess progress and the effects of rail privatisation in the United Kingdom, USA, South America, Europe and other countries. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2004 and 2008. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
