Whistler and Valley Express Transit System: A Small Agency Gears up for Tourists and Soon, the World
This article describes transit operations in the resort community of Whistler in British Columbia. While BC Transit owns the buses in the region, Whistler/Squamish Transit handles the operations and maintenance. The article profiles the Whistler and Valley Express Transit System (WAVE) which has its costs shared between the municipality of Whistler and BC Transit. Ninety percent of WAVE's ridership is tourists on vacation. The system uses flexible scheduling to accommodate its ridership, of which ninety percent is tourists on vacation. During the winter season, the system runs at close to a 24-hour service, with most of the passengers boarding the buses with ski equipment or snowboards. The article relates that in anticipation of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games coming to the area, BC Transit will will supplement Whistler Transit's biodiesel fleet with new hydrogen fuel cell buses. It will also be implementing the Transit Secure program to meet its security needs.
