Making A Comeback

Rapid increases in population are leading communities throughout Great Britain to push for the reopening of old railway lines. This article describes some of these efforts, and highlights both the benefits and obstacles they face. In many cases, much of the infrastructure of the old lines still exists and direct links to population centers could be improved with comparatively little expense. Feasibility analyses suggest that the reopening schemes may not be profitable early on and would need subsidizing, but that they offer a cost-effective long-term solution to reducing traffic congestion. However, the UK government does not see reopening rail lines as a priority, and thus most of the funding will have to be instigated by local government and the rail companies.
