CONSOLIDATION THEORY FOR CYCLIC LOADING
The discusser attempts to supplement the paper by noting a related consideration in the analysis of storage facilities constructed on soft compressible subsoils and constructed to cyclic loading. Storage facilities such as oil and chemical tanks are often constructed on coastal zones where subsoil formations are soft and compressible. Low factors of safety may often be incorporated in related stability (bearing capacity) analyses. Under such low factors of safety, soft compressible organic silt, silty clay, clay, and peat formations would experience excessive undrained deformations. Under cyclic loading, especially during the initial several cycles, the induced undrained deformations could be the dominant element. It is pointed out that where "steady-state consolidation settlements" would decrease with decreasing period of cyclic loading as predicted by the model, undrained deformations would accumulate to greater magnitudes with increasing frequency of loading (unloading).
