MOTORWAY EXPERIMENT WITH CRCP

Experimental lengths of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) have been constructed on the M180 south Humberside Motorway between Sandtoft and the River Trent. The depth of the slab and position of reinforcement have been varied in seven single carriageway lengths, each approximately 1.6 km long. It is claimed that CRCP gives a better joint-free riding surface and is a more durable form of pavement. Comparative lengths of jointed reinforced and unreinforced rigid pavement have been included. Two different types of transition between the two types of construction have been used - the 'burdell' or wide flange beam type, allowing free movement of the end of the slab, and fixed anchorages as used on the M62. Fine cracking of the pavement should occur at distances of one to three metres apart; the 0.6 per cent area of longitudinal reinforcement is intended to prevent the cracks from opening. Paving of the 11.2 M wide main carriageway was carried out using a crawler mounted wire-guided Guntert and Zimmerman slip-form paver. Drainage problems caused by the increased run-off from the motorway have required improvements to the drainage system of the whole area. /TRRL/
