CALCULATION METHOD FOR A LOADING MANUAL
Although Classification Society Rules may stipulate that a ship be provided with loading instructions, all possible loading and ballast distributions can rarely be covered in advance and there is a need for a method for the direct determination, on board the ship and without undue effort, of the longitudinal stresses produced under any loading conditions. The Author, of Germanischer Lloyd, describes and discusses in detail a method, developed some years ago by his Society, which allows the determination, on board, of the effective longitudinal bending moments and shear forces. Although special equipment for such a purpose is now widely used, particularly in big ships, the method described has regained significance with the availability of the programmable portable calculator.
