HOROZONTALLY LOADED VERTICAL PLATE ANCHORS IN SAND
The discusser notes that square plates yielded lower force coefficients than cirular plates of equivalent area. Earlier work on shallow anchors led to the conclusion that the pull-out resistance of a circular plate diameter was approximiately 66% of that of a square one withsides h=d. Allowance for equivalent area still yields P subs u (circular) /P sub u (square) approximately equal to 0.84. Comments are made on tests on square and circular plates pulled continuously out of dense, fine sand. The discusser found a considerably greater zone of disturbance around a 50-mm plate embedded to lambda =7 in medium sand. The test was carried out in a large glass-sided tank, dyed sand layers being used to facilitate the observation of the failure mechanism.
