DEVELOPMENT OF A SIMPLIFIED SECOND SHRINKAGE TEST
MISE AU POINT D'UN ESSAI SIMPLIFIE DE SECOND RETRAIT
Second shrinkage is a new characteristic of cement paste related to the risk of cracking in structures during the first hours or days after concrete has been poured. The knowledge of this phenomenon can give additional useful data on all products which are involved in hydration (cement, admixtures, secondary additives) and perhaps also on the hydration mechanism itself. It is shown that second shrinkage can be very simply and reliably measured. The measurements are reproducible, and do not depend on the characteristics of the measuring apparatus (especially shape and volume of the sample); this augurs well for cross-checking between laboratories. Attention is drawn to the need of developing an official procedure, and the authors indicate the aspects which remain to be defined with this aim in view. /TRRL/
