SUGGESTED METHODS FOR MONITORING ROCK MOVEMENTS USING INCLINOMETERS AND TILTMETERS

The object of the work is to specify and to a certain extent standardise test methods, without hindering the development and improvement of the methods. The following methods are described: (1) inclinometer sounding apparatus which basically consists of an inclination sensor. Measurements can be made at any depth, but only normally with respect to the axis of the borehole. Based on periodic measurements, the magnitude, direction and rate of the movement can be detected. (2) an inclinometer fixed in the borehole, which consists of a series of linked sensors. In contrast to the inclinometer sounding apparatus, a detailed depth profile of the movements can be determined. The inclinometer is used to record continuously and automatically movements normal to the axis of the borehole. Measurements can be linked to an alarm system. (3) tiltmeter, which consists of a sensor for measuring static and dynamic angle change at a defined point, and is portable. By means of periodic measurements the magnitude and rate of angle changes can be determined. For continuous measurements tiltmeters are fixed straight to the rock. Apparatus and measuring methods, and methods of calculating, assessing and illustrating the results are described. /TRRL/
