Channel Tunnel Rail Link: Contract 342 Installation of Bridge 3590

This article details the major aspects of the construction of Bridge 3590, which carries the North Kent Line (NKL) over the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and also how it was built with minimum disruption to the existing infrastructure. This bridge was built alongside the NKL and then during a 3-day railway possession the chalk spine supporting the railway was removed, the bridge lifted and slid into place, the backfill placed, and the railway reopened. It should be kept in mind that at the same time the bridge N160, to take the NKL Link Down Line under the existing NKL was also designed, constructed alongside the existing tracks, and installed during the same possession weekend, all by the same teams. The design, construction, and installation took place from early January 2002 to early May 2003, the possession weekend being early in May 2003.
