Wheeling Offsets the Fuel-Pricing Pain
This article, the third in a series on the Wheeling & Lake Erie (W&LE) railroad, looks at rising fuel prices and the resulting impacts on operations, finances, and profitability. The author relates that on average, each locomotive requires 1,150 gallons of fuel for a 75-mile. At an average consumption rate of more than 15 gallons per mile, and with more than 40 trains running a day, the fuel costs can be daunting for a railroad. The author describes how and when the W&LE railroad decides to buy fuel, where it stores it, and how tank cars are used to shuttle the fuel to the locomotives.
