Validity and Reliability of a School Travel Survey
Few studies have explored active travel assessment measurement properties, despite growing active nonmotorized travel interest for trips to and from school. Criterion validity is evaluated by the authors and a young schoolchild-sampled questionnaire for test-retest reliability for to and from school travel is assessed, including after school destination, travel companion, and travel mode. Fifty four children 8 to 11 years of age completed, on two consecutive school days, a travel survey, for test-retest reliability assessment. Twenty eight children 8 to 10 years of age and their parents completed, on five consecutive weekdays, a travel survey for criterion validity assessment. Substantial agreement indicated test-retest reliability of all questions. Substantial parent and child report agreement on mode of transport, after school destination, and travel mode questions were also displayed. When compared with parental reports for this population, validity for most items was indicated after reliable collection of a questionnaire completed by school-age children from to and from school travel assessment, including after school destination, travel companion, and travel mode.
