TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION - AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD?
One approach to the problem of traffic data collection is to record the information in a particular situation photographically, and to abstract the required data from the photography at a later date. The major difficulties associated with such surveys are described as the expensive nature of the required photography and the time-consuming, and hence expensive, operation of abstracting the required data. This paper describes a technique whereby a semi-automatic method is used to collect the required data in a digital form which may then be processed to provide information relating to many different traffic flow parameters. The requirements of suitable photographic cover, and the selection of the most suitable camera are discussed, leading to the decision to employ a vinten mark III 16 mm camera and a robot motor recorder 24 C with A 35 mm format, fixed to special vibration-proof mountings in a jet ranger turbine helicopter. The study reported in this paper involved positioning the helicopter at approx 610 M over a complex intersection in the centre of Bradford. Colour reversal film was used in both cameras, and methods employed for collection and processing of the data are described. Results from this study indicate that the position on the ground at one second intervals of all vehicles will be known. It is considered that it is then comparatively simple to convert these data into a form which will give traffic flow, speed, journey time, origin-and-destination information and, in fact, almost any other traffic parameter which may be required. /TRRL/
