Freedom Ticket
In this article the author describes recent implementation of interoperable smart cards by the Delaware River Port Authority's (DRPA) Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO). This implementation was enabled by the recent Contactless Fare Media System (CFMS) standard announced by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) that will, given pervasive adoption, coordinate all of the smart card systems across North America. The standard is based upon the Regional Interoperability Standard (RIS) created by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and will primarily apply to Proximity Integrated Circuit Cards (PICC). PATCO interfaces with two other regional systems, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) and New Jersey Transit, to implement the new standards. The article describes contingencies associated with coordinating interoperability among these three systems.
