Bus Rapid Transit: A Handbook for Partners
This handbook describes the service and infrastructure characteristics that define Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). While its objective is to discuss those elements that constitute a BRT system, the handbook is not a technical manual. It presents summaries of lessons learned from BRT case study experiences in California. The handbook is also intended for use by California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) professionals, elected officials, local jurisdictions, transit operating and planning agencies, and the general public, in order to understand Caltrans’ role in BRT development as well as the roles and responsibilities of the various partners involved in BRT in the state. Included in the Appendix is technical information about many BRT and rapid bus projects in California, as well as a summary of international experiences.
