UZ on the Path to Renewal
This article describes how Ukraine is updating its extensive rail network in order to become more commercially viable and raise funding for investment from outside sources. Ukrzaliznytsya, the national railroad, is reliant on freight traffic for revenues, but has suffered from a shortage of dual-system electric locomotives. A $2 billion investment is expected to help renew rolling stock, purchase new freight wagons, passenger coaches and locomotives, as well as upgrade infrastructure to allow for higher speeds and more electrification to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The country’s geographical position provides it the opportunity to act as a transit hub, and the volume of freight has been growing steadily. The article provides additional information on Ukraine’s financial needs and structural reform. Also included is a map of the railway system.
