Exposure to Uncertainty and Risk in Future Airline Investment Decisions
This paper discusses the changing and newly emerging determinants of airline investment decisions and reveals the increased exposure to risk and uncertainty that must now be faced by carrier decision-makers, and holders of their debt. Yet, despite the increasing difficulty in arriving at intelligent re-equipment decisions, it is possible that the outcome may more closely approximate an optimal allocation of resources than has previously characterized the industry. That is, if as a result of the changing and newly emerging determinants of airline investment decisions, aircraft over capacity in the industry is reduced and resources will be freed for other uses in the airline or other industries.
