Treacherous conditions meet a sticky end

This article examines the use in the UK of a natural sugar co-product, Safecote, as an additive to brine for spreading on roads in winter. An eastern county, Lincolnshire, had already adopted pre-wetted salting as an innovation to treat lightly-trafficked rural roads but wanted to improve performance further. Another county had tested Safecote-treated salt and found it to be the only treatment still effective the morning after its application, even following rain. Safecote had already been used in other countries as a liquid addition to chloride brine and Lincolnshire has introduced this at one of its brine depots for the 2007-2008 winter season. A further advantage envisaged is a reduction in the number of treatments and therefore of gritter driver hours, helping to meet new working time regulations. It is also noted that the addition of Safecote to brine reduces the corrosive properties of the chlorides, potentially decreasing damage to gritting vehicles.
