CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT IN THE MAROTS SYSTEM
In the maritime mobile satellite service demand assignment of communication channels is required in order to make efficient use of the very limited part of the frequency spectrum associated. As a consequence of the objective to keep ship terminal equipment as simple as possible, assignment control should be performed by shore stations. Two basic assignment control methods are possible. Either one shore station per satellite coverage area assigns channels (centralized control) or all shore stations assign channels (distributed control). In the MAROTS system the concept of distributed control has been chosen. The MAROTS channel assignment procedure is described. In the MAROTS system the inherent problem of distributed control, i.e. double seizure of channels is eliminated completely.
