Implementation of vehicle restraint system standards on motorways

After the vehicle restraint system standards EN 1317-x were put into power national technical specifications had to be modified to adopt new regulation. These specification changes had resulted in the fact that a number of modifications of existing barriers and installation of new ones were expected. The motorways with high traffic volumes, high share of heavy goods vehicles and high speeds were high on the action list. To address the problem of upgrading vehicle restraint system on motorways a new systematic approach was developed. The building blocks of the system, which include field data acquisition, database analysis, and spatial analysis with GIS programs and others together with regulation limitations, have resulted in an automated process. The result of the process gives high performance and cost effective network analysis with precise answer where and how to act. The results of the analysis are presented both in attribute and graphical way. Although the system was developed for the use on the motorway system its versatility allows him to be used on any road network. The aim of the paper is to present the method of analytical process, required input data and achieved results on the Slovenian motorway network (A).
