IRISH PORTS--CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION
With an anticipated overall growth in trade increasing inter-port competition and in the light of several years of experience of new types of traffic flow, notably container and ro-ro traffic, the Irish ports are busy consolidating their current activities and preparing for the future. In both the north and the south an upturn in trade is expected as a result of increased investment in manufacturing industry, additional agricultural output, offshore projects, improved road and rail links and the potential use of some Irish ports as transshipment bases for the UK as an alternative to continental ports. The two basic questions that Irish port authorities are asking themselves, then, are: from which areas of the market are they likely to derive new or additional business and to what extent will new facilities be required?
