Report: I-35W Maintenance Recommendations Ignored
In this article the author discusses a report given to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) by consultants regarding the structural integrity of the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis prior to its collapse on August 1, 2007. The report recommended new policies such as the inclusion of redundancies for the bridge, a requirement for annual in-depth inspections for those areas of the bridge that are fracture critical, and, lastly, a plan for the replacement of those bridges that have received a low rating in two or more years previous. The question of why the proposed improvements were not adopted by MnDOT is also addressed. It is noted that the lack of disseminated information from a previous gusset plate bridge collapse in Ohio, as well as bureaucratic and financial difficulties, contributed to the problem and to a delay in preventative maintenance.
