Transportation in Transition. Proceedings of the Eighteenth Annual Meeting

This publication presents the proceedings of the 18th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Form, which was held from October 17-19, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme evolved from the growing concern that is being exhibited throughout the United States and the world for the finite resources with which transportation professionals are working. These concerns for natural resources, energy, and environment are driving many changes not the least of which are changes in transportation. The papers in this book and the topics discusses at the annual meeting, evidence that emphasis be placed on modal transitions. These are occurring in both passenger and freight, in both intra and intercity moves. The papers presented will help transportation modes to successfully meet the challenges before them. And in doing so, protect the environment, conserve resources and fuel, increase safety, and minimize the adverse impacts of the long term inflation, all for the well-being of society. The papers from the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Canadian Transport Research Forum, which was held from May 30-June 1, 1977, are included in this volume because they provide further examples of the overall theme, Transportation in Transition.
