Toward a Transportation Policy Agenda for Climate Change

This chapter is intended as a synthesis of the various conference presentations and of the issues raised during conference discussions. Data and other quantitative measures are drawn from previous chapters and from the conference presentation listed at the end of the chapter. These presentations addressed a wide range of strategies for reducing transportation related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, some in combination with each other and some self-standing. A summary of these strategies includes the following: (1) improved fuel economy; (2) alternative fuel technologies; (3) tailpipe emission regulations; (4) regulatory programs; (5) marketing campaigns to associate fuel-efficient purchasing behavior; (5) systems integration and management; (6) transportation demand management (TDM); and (7) integration of transportation and urban development planning.
