Protecting Our Marine Environment: Destruction of the F/V Challenger
Destruction of the F/V Challenger, a former marine shrimping vessel in southern Florida, is examined. Involvement of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg for potentially adverse Caloosahatchee River water, environmental, and ecological impact minimization resulted after a report of pollution from the vessel. The case fell under federal control after the registered owner would not assume responsibility for the cleanup. The removal and destruction process; vessel state and litigation protection value; planning for and actual removal and destruction; cost summary and lessons learned for the final project; and environmental benefits are described. Inserts describe the execution stage project network and responsible party contact attempts.
