Laser Quest: The True Value of Test Programs

This article describes results from testing different models of laser-based traffic detection technologies. One significant advantage of lasers is that they can select one target out of a crowded field, a task that is difficult to accomplish with microwave radar. It can also operate as a presence-detecting instrument, detecting standing vehicles, even motorcycles, which can be used to control traffic lights. The test station consisted of a multi-system layout on a main road with a daily vehicle count of 11,000 vehicles and a speed limit of 80 km/h. The layout permitted comparison of data measured from many different geometries, top-down, tilted, street level, approaching, and departing. A reference radar was also used for purposes of comparison. The test lasted for about one year, through all four seasons, and under varying weather conditions. Photographs accompanying the article illustrate some of the strengths of the technology.
