Operator Training: What you Need to Know to Get the Best Operators
This article focuses on finding and training the best bus operators. The author includes interviews with a number of different training managers who stress the importance of choosing the right candidates, providing them with the right skills through training and keeping up with training. The author describes variation between skills needed for fixed-route service and paratransit operators, the needs for implementing a behavioral-based hiring system, diversity requirements, mentoring as opposed to disciplining workers, and continuing training and motivating staff. One successful program’s basic skill set is described, starting with fundamentals, such as dressing properly for the job and greeting customers, all the way to responding to special needs, handling difficult situations, and dealing with stress.
