US MERGERS IN THE MELTING POT
The past twelve months have seen an unprecedented wave of merger attempts in the US airline industry, with ten carriers currently involved. The article looks at the reasons for this movement, which arise out of deregulation and fears of deteriorating finances, and the current state of play. The regulatory authorities' attitude, which will be crucial to the outcome of the four mergers now under consideration, is also examined. /Flight International/
