Electronic Horizons: Why Digital Mapping Is the Building Block of ADAS

This article describes the importance of highly accurate digital mapping data for the increasing safety potential of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). ADAS have been aided in the European Union by the automotive industry’s program to improve road safety in terms of reducing roadway accidents by 50 percent by 2010. The rapid mapping of data is crucial to such ends, as sensors for blind spots and cruise control warnings require such mapping as a prerequisite. One digital mapping organization has developed a method of swiftly gathering three-dimensional mapping information through the use of low-flying planes swiftly surveying large areas of land. It is noted in closing that a well-defined data model and specification for the interface are necessary for having successful applications that support navigation data.
