WATERPROOFING CONCRETE
The article compares developments in concrete mix design intended to produce a waterproof construction. Some waterproofing admixtures used in concrete mixes produce water-repellent calcium salts precipitated in the pores of the set concrete making it impervious to capillary action. Other waterproofing materials may be in the form of acrylic emulsion or solutions of siliconates for application to exterior surfaces. Silicone treatment does not block the capillaries in concrete so that the transmission of water vapour can continue. In cases where complete waterproofing is required, then a water repellent treatment is inadequate and a waterproof membrane should be used. The article describes these waterproofing systems and compares their characteristics for particular applications. /TRRL/
