University to Test Wireless Methods for Assessing Bridge Performance

This article describes a $1-million project to test the feasibility of installing a network of Internet-based wireless sensors on bridges to monitor structural performance. The sensors will be linked to databases so that the information can be quickly evaluated for accuracy. The conditions the sensors will be reporting on include deformation, vibration and corrosion. They will be placed on two test bridges, and they will operate until 2010. An initial test on a footbridge on the campus of Southern Illinois University will be carried out, with researchers subjecting it to various loads to test the sensors' accuracy. The second structure is a vehicular bridge about 25 mi. from the campus that has experienced significant deterioration due to heavy truck traffic from a nearby coal mine.
