VISIBILITY DETERMINATION IN ROAD TUNNELS
SICHTWEITENBESTIMMUNG IN STRASSENTUNNELN
This paper deals with clouding in road tunnels which is caused mainly by the emission of soot from diesel vehicles. A method of calculating visibility distance based on optical principles and measurements is given, which gives the permissible clouding factor for dimensioning the tunnel ventilation. In addition various measuring devices were installed for monitoring the tunnel. As a measurable variable the extinction coefficient was chosen. The report contains information about the effects on the tunnel lighting and the problem of selecting the hygienically acceptable maximum values. In addition measures of clouding, carbon monoxide emission and return-suction are listed. /TRRL/
