STATIC ELECTRIFICATION STUDIES DURING TANK WASHING ON THE S.S. MOBIL DAYLIGHT

The report deals with test work performed aboard a clean, gas-free tanker during a ballast voyage and these test results compared with those of similar studies. Program consisted of two parts. The static electrification segment studied respective field strengths during tank washing procedures, the variables being wash water temperature and detergent, type and number of cleaning machines, clean and dirty tanks, and tank size. The gas concentration studies were conducted conjunctively. The Special Studies segment measured electrical activity, charge density and potential on insulated objects in charges mists, evaluated field meter design to measure distortion-free electric fields and determined the effect of a water spray on an electric field produced by a mist.
