ALI KEEPS DRIVERS BETTER INFORMED
Brief details are given of the ali system being developed in West Germany by Volkswagen and the car radio manufacturers Blaupunkt. It will give drivers information on traffic congestion, weather conditions and speed limits. Each of the 400 cars taking part in the experiment on a 100 km motorway section between Dortmund and Essen, will be equipped with a keyboard on which the driver will punch the code for his destination; a radio aerial will be fixed on the underside of each car. Induction loops embedded in the surfacing at each motorway intersection are connected to a data processor at the roadside, which in turn is linked to a central information unit. A simple display on the dashboard tells the driver of any hazards ahead, what his maximum speed ought to be and, if he is heading for a congested section of road, directs him to a different route. Costs of the system, installation and experiment are quoted. /TRRL/
