TANK WASHING SAFETY ON BOARD S.S. MANGELIA
This report presents the findings of an investigation conducted during tank cleaning procedures on board S.S. "Mangelia". The parameters tested in relation to the generation of field strengths included both clean or dirty tanks, the number of cleaning guns, temperature of washing water, air ventilation through cargo lines and Dasic injection. Washing clean tanks generated moderately high field strengths; fields generated from dirty tanks were negative, but became positive as cleaning progressed. Four cleaning guns produced field strengths no more than 50% higher than those produced by one gun. The effect of temperatures between 18 deg C and 31 deg C was small and at 70 deg C the effect was no higher than the field strengths produced by cold water washing. Blowing air through the cargo lines for ventilation generated moderately high field strengths when there was a water buildup on the bottom. The injection of Dasic generated moderately high to high negative field strength. Recirculated water from dirty tanks produced high positive field strengths but reversed to high negative when Dasic was injected. Factors which produced no effect included the injection of 2,000 ppm crude oil into the sea water spray, and water pressure variations of 6 to 10 Kg/cm square. Throughout the investigation no static discharges were found.
