PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS TO CYCLISTS IN DARKNESS
VERHUETUNG VON ZWEIRADUNFAELLEN IN DER DUNKELHEIT
The central factor in this study is the cyclist, who is in special danger in twilight and darkness. A study is made into the means which gives the greatest possible safety improvements. Tests have shown that the preparation of provisional standards for reflectorised marking materials for bicycles and motor cycles incorporating orientation aids such as shape, colour etc., is necessary for the clear and unambiguous identification of cyclists. In the present state of technology, reflecting tyres give an optimum level of lateral protection. On the grounds of safety, reflecting tyres should be prescribed as the uniform signal feature for cyclists in addition to the lighting arrangements which have hitherto been legally required. The introduction of such a legal regulation is something which could be introduced by the governments of the European countries without initial or subsequent costs and should be required of road users, as the additional costs would be greatly outweighed by the savings in the drop in the accident rate. /TRRL/
