GAS CONCENTRATION AND STATIC ELECTRIFICATION STUDIES DURING TANK WASHING ON THE S.S. MOBIL TRANSPORTER

This report covers the gas concentration and static electrification studies made during tank washing on a four-day voyage aboard the 62,000 DWT OBO "Mobil Transporter". Gas concentration levels were monitored before, during and after tank washing and are given in terms of explosive limits. Twelve electrification studies were made in two tanks, 360,000 and 530,000 cu ft, after they were washed and gas-freed. Various parameters affecting static electrification were studied and included the effect of Dasic detergent, water, temperature, tank size, the kind and number of cleaning machines, length of wash time, and lowering the surface tension of the wash water. Other investigations reflected in this study included charge decay in the tanks, charge strength in descent below deck, polarity of charge, an attempt to relate field strength and current from the corona probe, and radio noise measurement.
