Three Challenges in Using SRWs and Other Reinforced-Soil Structures: Part 2B
In this article the authors discuss the use of segmental retaining walls (SRW) from the perspective of materials science and engineering (MSE) slope and wall design. The first issue addressed is that of the design method, and in doing so, the authors discuss the available national design methods for practice in North America. The article next looks at engineering software for executing and implementing the selected design method. Also important for design is determining the amount of geosynthetic reinforcement strength needed and the types of soil materials to be used in construction. Drainage features for protecting the reinforced soil volume are next discussed, as well as a number of other factors, such as surcharge loadings, stability, and anticipated movements during construction. Finally, the authors also explain what type of information should be included in a more finalized construction drawing, including- typical wall cross sections, location of structures, structure profile, geosynthetic installation information, and facing system details.
