Carbon Neutral by 2012
This article describes efforts undertaken by East Midlands Airport to make its ground operations carbon neutral by 2012. The author points out that as early as 2002, the airport was the first in the UK to achieve Environmental Management Standard ISO14001 certification. The carbon neutral goal is part of its December 2006 Master Plan; the estimated savings required to achieve carbon neutrality are 12,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. The plan’s centerpiece is the new 492-foot western pier known as the Sky Walk. A ground source heat pump recovery system supplies an under-floor heating system for this major concourse. Gas heating will be phased out and replaced by wood-fired boilers burning locally-produced wood that is continually replanted so as to absorb CO2. Existing vehicles are to be switched over to bio-diesel. The airport is also the first to adopt natural ventilation and natural daylight systems, both of which are described. The airport has also requested permission to install four wind turbines on site to generate 10 percent of its own electricity needs.
