More Pressure Than Ever: With More Airline Seats and Flights on Offer Than Ever Before, the World's Airports Are Facing Unprecedented Pressure
In this article the author describes strains on the airline industry due to increasing demand. The number of annual passengers handled by the world’s airlines, it is noted, will increase from 2.1 billion to 2.8 billion between 2006 and 2015. Using the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Official Airline Guide (OAG) statistics as the source, the author points out the most popular flight pathways. The top 25 of the world’s airports, in terms of passenger throughput, handle 1.5 billion passengers per annum. Some statistics are also given concerning low-cost carriers (LCC), which account for 22 percent of the total activity in Europe and 18 percent of the total activity in North America. In the Middle East, the article explains, the LCC market is expanding quickly though still taking up a smaller share of the overall market.
