BANKS CATCH UP WITH CONTAINER AGE

Research indicates that, with the establishment of the concept of transporting goods by intermodal container movement, there is a need for an internationally acceptable liner bill of lading or waybill document to cover such movements. The author reviews the current situation with the problems of delay in receiving appropriate documents promptly and documentation costs. He refers to the various types of bill of lading issued, which can cause complications, and to transport documents. The last section deals with letters of credit and the difficulties that can arise with regard to these and the acceptance by clearing bank of combined transport bills of lading.
