Air/rail Passenger Intermodality Concepts in Germany
With capacity constraints at European hub airports having grown in recent years, policymakers often demand a better integration of different transport modes. One goal in this regard is a shift of short-haul flights to high speed trains. This paper provides an overview on the solutions found by German transport operators to offer attractive services by combining air and rail. At first, the infrastructural integration of German airports into the railway network is described, followed by an analysis on the intermodal services and ticketing options offered. The paper concludes with an outlook on the future of intermodal services in Germany.
