Bridge Games
In the last 10 years, millions of pounds have been spent in the UK on improvements to road bridges to ensure they can cope with heavy loads. However, when the Upperton Road Viaduct in the south west of Leicester was deemed to require complex and expensive repairs, Leicestershire County Council decided to demolish it instead and replace it with a new low-level road, built along the same alignment. The author describes the history of the old viaduct, and outlines the social advantages of the new road, including crime, security and regeneration issues, plus the provision of new transport options. The construction company Nuttall was appointed to carry out the demolition work over a nine-day period during the October 2007 half-term, and the technical procedure by which the viaduct was demolished is explained. The temporary road and traffic management systems are also outlined. Some controlled disposal of dangerous material and subsequent demolition had to be done outside the nine-day window. The new road's construction period is between October 2007 and September 2008, the new traffic flow's permanency is September 2008, and the landscaping timetable is September 2008 to December 2008.
