Visibility is Key to Safety
Beginning November 2008, a voluntary American National Standards Institute standard for worker visibility will become mandatory for contractors working on federal highway projects. This article describes the ANSI 107-2004 standard and the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) requirement, plus gives some suggestions on visibility apparel. The ANSI 107-2004 standard breaks safety apparel into 3 classes based on work environments and traffic speeds. The FHWA will require all workers within the right of way of a Federal-aid highway who are exposed to either traffic or construction equipment to wear safety apparel that meets the highest 2 classes of safety apparel. Manufacturers of safey apparel are increasingly offering work clothing that is more comfortable than traditional safety apparel while still remaining ANSI 107-2004 compliant.
