Design and Traffic Organization for Ultra-Wide Urban Street in China

With the rapid economic development and urbanization process in China, there emerges minor cities, satellite towns, development zones and so on. Under this background, some ultra-wide urban streets, with right-of-way width equal to or over 70.0m and different to the ordinary urban streets, also came into being. This paper firstly defines what ultra-wide urban street is by the comparison of several different widths, then, presents the locations and functions of ultra-wide streets. Based on some completed projects at Hangzhou, Nanjing and several other cities, the typical cross sections of ultra-wide streets are summarized, and further more, the key traffic organization methods for ultra-wide streets are detailed listed and demonstrated. Finally, this paper points out the possible problems in current ultra-wide streets and concludes the considerations for the use of ultra-wide streets.
