Cycling and health - what's the evidence?
This document brings together information on the benefits of cycling to health. The health benefits of physical activity are discussed in relation to all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, blood pressure, cancer, obesity, mental health, and building and maintaining healthy bones, muscles and joints, The benefits to different age groups and the amount of activity required to keep fit is explained. Cycling is of particular benefit in reducing the risk of type of diabetes, cancer, weight control and psychological well-being. The risks of cycling are described but are considered small relative to the risks of lackof physical inactivity. The wider benefits attributable to cycling include improved air quality, reduced noise pollution, increased play and activity opportunities for children, and social support and inclusion.
