Development of Highway Bridge Applying Ultra High Strength Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Developpement d'un Pont Routier Utilisant le Beton Fibre a Ultra-Hautes Performances
The article examines the design and construction of Japan's Horikoshi C Ramp Bridge, winner of the PIARC Prize for Construction, Maintenance and Operation. Situated on the East Kyushu Expressway, the bridge received applications of ultra high strength fiber reinforced concrete (UFC). UFC is a new concrete material whose characteristics include no required reinforcing bars, high flowability, high durability, high toughness, and ultra high strength. The authors also examine the future evolution of UFC, which in 2004 the Japan Society of Civil Engineers noted "...is anticipated to be used for over 100 years without any special repairs or reinforcements."
